- Cartilage, which forms parts of the nose
- and ears as well as the larynx, trachea, end of
- ribs, inter vertebral discs, and surfaces of
- skeletal joints, is flexible and somewhat elastic
- yet very strong. Cartilage is a specialized form
- of dense connective tissue with a rather rubbery
- intercellular matrix. Like dense connective
- tissue, cartilage has a relatively small quantity
- of connective tissue cells. In vertebrate embryos,
- the early skeleton is formed of cartilage which is
- usually replaced by bone in most species.
- The extracellular matrix of connective
- tissue is the collective term for the fibers and
- ground substance which house the cells of the
- tissue. Extra cellular matrices can exist in three
- states: solid, semi-solid, and liquid. Loose and dense
- connective tissues as well as cartilage have semi-solid
- extra cellular matrices. Bone is a connective tissue with a
- solid matrix. Blood and lymph are connective
- tissues with liquid extra cellular matrices.
